Planning for the big 3

We call the big 3 the three most important search engines / directories in terms of influence and incoming traffic. Namely, Google, Yahoo! and Inktomi. The first one because of its huge database feeding many other search engines, Yahoo! for its unparalleled popularity, Inktomi because it powers many other search engines creating a far reaching network. Altogether those routinely represent anywhere between 60% and 90% of total search engine referrals.

Yahoo is a longtime Internet reference and still the most used search engine on the net, hovering around the 40% market share mark. They provide a free submission service but it could take months to get one listing. In most cases commercial and corporate sites won't get a listing without paying the $299 express submission fee. This fee usually pays for itself in the first weeks of active listing. We also always suggest to get a Yahoo! Yellow Pages listing as more and more Internet users first check out the online equivalent of that big yellow book stuck under the sofa.

Google is not only a major player in the search engine industry but it keeps gaining popularity due to its exceptional database and user-friendly low-key approach. Not only that but Yahoo is now using the Google engine for most of its results besides their own directory. Google is therefore only second to Yahoo in referral traffic. Traffic stats show Google providing around 20% of search engine referrals, but with a site properly optimized this number can jump up to 40%. Original targeted content is the key to get maximized results with Google. Automatic link-exchange and Free-For-All (FFA) networks will get a site banned if detected. Sites using another site's content is very unlikely to get good listings.

Inktomi is not a search engine per se. Inktomi markets search technologies powering many major search engines at least in part. That includes Hotbot, MSN search, AOL search, NBCi, Looksmart, IWon.com and over 100 other secondary engines. Free submission is available but we strongly recommend to subscribe to Inktomi's inclusion fee ($12-$15/page) to include at least main pages in their database. But that does not get your site up top unless they are properly optimized.

When optimizing existing web pages it's just impossible to achieve top positions in many search engines for a wealth of unique keywords. Basically you may garner good results on a few engines for a couple keywords but probably not many of both. Remember that search engines look particularly at inbound traffic and link popularity as well as actual web site navigation links for submitted and spidered pages. So your main pages are your best bet as entry pages. Since you can't please all search engines we will almost always optimize existing pages for the big 3.
