Once you've carefully chosen a set of keywords, we conduct a global study of all search phrases. Basically we look at how many times people type those keywords in major search engines and how many competing pages come up in the resulting listings. This is a primordial step as results are sometimes surprising. This process allows us to find keyword niches and also discard those keywords with few searches and many competing pages.

Below is a sample of one such analysis ran on Google for 4 selected search phrases on the topic of search engines.

As you can see if those were the initially selected keywords and this step was overlooked you would end up with very poor chances to place a listing in top position, even if you did it would probably yield poor traffic. By contrast the phrase "goggle search engine" is very interesting although it is an obvious misspelling and is not very useful as such.
